What is Dragons Speed Dating?

What is Dragon Speed Dating?

Dragons Speed Dating is a GCA members event. First launched in 2017, it is a fun way to meet prospective business partners, network with existing business contacts and keep up to date with current industry issues.

Publishers meet at least 3 buyers and have the opportunity to leave samples with all 18 buyers attending.

This member’s event is open to up to 72 different publishers and 18 different retailers.

Over the course of an afternoon the retailers meet 12 different greeting card publishers for 10 minutes each.

Publishers get the opportunity to have a 10 minute meeting with 3 different buyers, one national account, one small group and one independent. Publishers can also submit up to 3 cards for the buyers ‘goodie/sample bags’.

During the afternoon there is also a GCA Panel Seminar, led by some of our GCA Council Members, all experienced business leaders in our industry. Publishes attending are asked to submit questions ahead of the event to set the agenda for this relaxed discussion.

Retailers range from large national accounts, through to small groups and independents. They come prepared with a cabin-sized suitcase to take home the publishers samples!

This event is open to all GCA publishers, of all sizes. It is a great forum to test out reaction to new designs, build on exiting relationships or indeed meet buyers for the first time.

About the panellists

  • Yvette Clarkson is co-founder of Heyyy Cards, a relatively new greeting card brand she runs with her husband, Dan. Trading for just over four years, but with more than 20 years of industry experience Yvette is passionate about creativity, design, and the power of creating meaningful connections through card sending. She was delighted to join the Dragon’s panel this year to share her honest insights into building and sustaining a new brand and navigating both the creative and commercial sides of this evolving industry.
  • Perlina Pierre-Davis has over 20 years’ experience in the greeting card industry, working across export sales, licensing, national accounts, and international distribution. She represents UK publishers Paper Rose and Nigel Quiney, working with distributors, retailers, and licensees across Europe and other key markets.
Her role spans commercial strategy, product development, pricing, and route-to-market, giving her a practical, end-to-end understanding of how the industry operates. Perlina is passionate about sustainable growth, long-term partnerships, and protecting the value of creativity in an increasingly complex marketplace.
  • Emma Young is MD of Paperlink, Drawing on three decades at Paperlink, Emma discussed how publishers approach launching seasonal product long before the season has even happened. Navigating early buying cycles, limited data and the delicate balance between tried and tested ranges and fresh creativity. A candid look at timing, instinct and why that ‘surprise bestseller’ happens to all of us.
  • Ian Bradley has been a greeting card agent since 2004 and works with a wide range of retailers, including gift shops, garden centres, card shops, farm shops and many more. He fell in love with the industry through his sheer love for greeting cards — especially the joy of choosing the perfect card for the perfect person or occasion. “I sell fabulous products made by amazing people to brilliant retailers.”
Ian loves to work with suppliers at all levels of their business evolution. When he’s not selling cards, you’ll find him enjoying big walks, real ale, music, good food, interior design and being around happy people. He’s also a dedicated vinyl collector.
